Saand Ki Aankh (Hindi Movie) - Reviews
Another biopic has hit the screens and this time it is about sisters-in-law, Chandra Tomar and Prakashi Tomar better known as the Revolver Dadis now in their 80s.
Flashback 1958 in Johri Village Baghpat in Uttar Pradesh, Prakashi is married into the Tomar family. Cut to year 1999 now at the age of 60 Chandro and Prakashi Tomar are sisters-in-law residing in Uttar Pradesh in the village Johri. They stay with their respective spouses Jai Singh and Bhanwar Singh along with their strict and orthodox brother-in-law Sarpanch Rattan Singh. They have curbed all their desires as they were not allowed to do anything of their free will and lead a very orthodox and mundane life in the village.
When a medical practitioner Dr. Yashpal comes to their village leaving his medical profession and starts his own shooting range, Chandro’s daughter Shefali shows keen interest to practise shooting. Chandro takes Shefali to the range despite Rattan Singh’s vehement protests. And when Chandro for fun takes a shot at the target, she hits a bullseye! Bewildered Yashpal coaxes her to try a few more times but Chandro proves that she is more than a fluke- she is a pro! This is when Prakashi joins them and turns out to be an expert shooter herself.
Yashpal encourages them to take part in a shooting competition to be held in Chandigarh but since the Dadis have never stepped out of their house, they are reluctant to do so. But ultimately they manage to trick their husbands and Rattan and leave for the competition where despite the others looking down on them and smirking at them, Prakashi comes first with Chandro a close second. They inspire their daughters also to take part in the competition. From here they start winning a lot of competitions but eventually they let the cat is out of the bag making Rattan Singh and their respective husbands furious.
The camaraderie between Bhumi Pednekar and Taapsee Pannu as Chandro and Prakashi Tomar is simply fantastic. They have done such a superb job together that you cannot pinpoint who is better than the other. Both have individual moments but both are tied as per their performances are concerned. Playing deglam roles and roles that are required them to look much much older than their real age, they are truly a treat to watch.
Vineet Kumar Singh as Dr. Yashpal is wonderful and lovable. In fact he is the one who is the trigger and inspiration to the Dadis success. Shaad Randhawa as Rambir Tomar son of Prakashi is hardly there but does well in whatever he has. Kuldeep Sareen as Bhanwar Singh and Pawan Chopra as Jai Singh are quite nice in their respective parts. A very important part in the film is the Maharani of Alwar and Nikhat Khan does an adorable job. Last but not the least Prakash Jha as Sarpanch Rattan Singh convinces you so much as the orthodox head of the Tomar family that you will love to hate him.
So much for conviction! Director Tushar Hiranandani leaves you emotional in the end but you will definitely clap for the Revolver Dadis who had appeared in the Aamir Khan show Satyameva Jayate. He makes the film in an entertaining fashion and yet has managed to bring out the pathos that the women in the village suffer at the hands of the male members as the former are all treated as doormats. The film will definitely inspire you and clap for the Dadis that despite losing their prime of the youth, they managed to carve a niche for themselves and also made their daughters into shooting champions for India.
